Amazon Pays 8M for More Virginia Land for Data Center Development

Amazon (AMZN) is fulfilling its promise to spend billions of dollars on data centers in Virginia and has acquired another massive property in Manassas for more major development.

The tech and e-commerce giant paid $218 million for 91 acres approved for data center development, the Business Journals reported. That comes after Amazon bought 140 acres for data centers in Manassas for $152 million in January.

The e-commerce and tech giant did not return a request for more details and comment. An entity run by Mike Garcia of Mike Garcia Construction sold the property at 14237 and 14209 Dumfries Road to Amazon.

In March, officials approved a rezoning amendment to allow the entire site to become a data center, and it’s also in the county’s Data Center Opportunity Zone Overlay District, per the Business Journals.

Amazon has other major data center projects in the area. And other premier tech companies are expanding their data center portfolios there. Microsoft recently bought 124 acres in Gainesville for $465.5 million.

Romance novel boom fuels Virginia bookstore’s success with ‘authors you won’t find anywhere else’

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Romance novels are booming, and a Chesapeake bookstore is capitalizing on the trend by specializing exclusively in the genre.

Novel Grounds bookstore offers everything from cowboys to dragons to dark romance across 33 different subgenres.

“So we have our cowboys and our sports, and we’ve got the dragons and the dark romance,” owner Megan Gallt said.

Gallt worked in the book-publishing business for more than 10 years before opening her dream bookstore dedicated to romance in 2023.

“It’s been phenomenal. We could not be any more embraced by the community, and we are having more fun than we already are. Chesapeake loves its romance books!” Gallt said.

Customer Shelley McDaniel-Griffin has bought 339 books since the store opened.

“The community they’ve built and the friendships I’ve made with coworkers and staff — it’s just amazing,” McDaniel-Griffin said.

Novel Grounds features books from 80% independent authors, including Virginia Beach writer Jana Sun.

“I like to blend fantasy into romance, but I love the magic and the whimsy. I love making the reader fall in love,” Sun said.

With 33 romance subgenres available, customers can easily feel overwhelmed. The store’s staff helps guide readers to their perfect match.

“I want you to come into Novel Grounds. We’re going to be all up in your business, and we are going to find that book for you and introduce you to some authors you won’t find anywhere else,” Gallt said.

Virginia delegate pushes car tax repeal study after other bills stall

Several bills to repeal the car tax in Virginia have failed in the General Assembly, but one Roanoke lawmaker has a proposal still moving through the process.

Democratic Delegate Lily Franklin, who represents parts of Roanoke County, has proposed legislation to start a study on what it would take to eliminate the car tax.

Lawmakers tabled a similar bill in a Senate committee last week, but Franklin said her bill may still have a chance because it’s different. She said a study is the best way to approach repealing the tax.

“There’s a lot of questions that are unanswered, and that’s really what’s stalled getting it completely passed through in the past. So this is the roadmap to getting it passed, and so we can look at all those different angles, come together, and decide how can we responsibly repeal this legislation,” Franklin said.

Republican Delegate Eric Zehr said he doesn’t believe another study is effective. He wants the tax removed as soon as possible.

“We don’t need more studies. We need to actually implement relief, and Republicans have put forward legislation that would give Virginians relief from this tax,” Zehr said.

Delegate Franklin says Governor Youngkin’s budget doesn’t include funding to eliminate the car tax. Delegate Zehr said they have identified resources that could make it possible.
