EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Students at Effingham College and Career Academy getting recognized for their efforts in introducing a new bill.
The school’s fall zoology class noticed Georgia does not have a designated state crustacean.
Students then landed on recommending the Georgia White Shrimp after conducting research and voting.
Speaker of the House Jon Burns came to the school Monday to celebrate the passing of House Bill 1341 recognizing these shrimp as the state’s official crustacean and acknowledging students’ efforts in making it happen.
“We’re blown away by these young people who have taken this initiative and have engaged in democracy. They worked hard, they studied hard, they made some real good decisions.”
