Driver checking out Hawaiian sunrise plunges off cliff, is rescued from ocean
A man driving toward a cliff in Hawaii to watch the sunrise inadvertently plunged over the edge and was rescued from the ocean, according to a local report.
Fishermen reported a swimmer in distress around 3:40 a.m. near the South Point Cliffs area in Naalehu on Hawaii’s Big Island, the Big Island Fire Department told KHON2. Fire officials said it took first responders about 30 minutes to get to the area due to the rural terrain.
“We might have had a few cars drive in the harbor in Kailua due to mapping issues, but my understanding is he was going off-roading and not paying attention to where he was going,” Hawaii Island Fire Chief Kazuo Todd told the station.
The man, whose name was not publicly released, was driving in the area to see the sunrise, fire officials said.

Mike Moody, one of the fishermen in the group that witnessed the man’s rental Jeep fall over the edge of the cliff, told the station that he believes the man “would have died 100%” if his dive partner did not spot him getting swept up in the water’s strong current.

“His driver side door was locked or pinned by a rock,” according to Moody. “He couldn’t get out the driver side, so he went to the passenger side of the upside-down vehicle, and as soon as he opened the door, he fell immediately in the water.”

Fire officials and the Coast Guard found the man about 100 yards from shore and coached him to a safe area on the shoreline, where he was rescued, fire officials said. He suffered from some facial injuries, scratches and slight hypothermia, according to the report.

On Monday, a tow truck hauled the rental vehicle up the side of the cliff using technical ropes and removed the vehicle from the scene.

Shane van Gisbergen earned his sixth career pole and second of the 2026 season on Saturday, rocketing to pole position around NASCAR’s all-new 3.4-mile street course at Naval Base Coronado. He even touched the wall twice on his fast lap, pushing to the absolute limit.
“A little bit (surprised),” said Van Gisbergen, who went out with the first group of qualifiers. “I thought the track would be better, and I thought people would execute a bit better. As I said, it’s just so difficult. There’s three or four corners you’re seeing for the first time of the day, and it’s on your heater. Amazing. The Red Bull Chevy is really good. Thank you to Trackhouse for doing a great job from yesterday, and we just need to get the driver a bit better,” he concluded with a smile.”

Van Gisbergen bested Carson Hocevar by 0.0156s with a fast lap of 2:14.788s. Ryan Blaney will start third, Zane Smith fourth, and Todd Gilliland fifth. Blaney was a little bit quicker than SVG for most of his lap, but lost it through the final set of corners.
Daniel Suarez, Ryan Preece, Connor Zilisch, Michael McDowell, and Austin Hill will out the remainder of the top ten on the starting grid.
Project 91 driver Kevin Magnussen qualified 21st for his NASCAR Cup debut. Notably, championship leader Tyler Reddick spun out, but still reached 17th on the grid. Denny Hamlin is just 19 points behind him, and will start 26th.

Some other notable drivers very deep in the field include William Byron in 27th, Chase Elliott 30th, and an injured Christopher Bell 37th. He will have Brent Crews on standby, and may finish the race for Bell on Sunday.
Jimmie Johnson was the first driver to set a time, and showed just how tricky things were as he had to use the runoff area in Turn 2 to avoid an incident. Erik Jones also smacked the wall at the exit of Turn 16, but there were no red flags during the session.

Anchorage is commemorating Juneteenth with dancing, music and celebrations of Black excellence and culture this weekend.
The citywide Juneteenth celebration also includes opportunities for education, community gathering and reflection, and features vendors and guest speakers. The event kicked off Friday and continues from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the Delaney Park Strip.

Saturday’s festivities, spotlighting the theme “Community and Culture,” kicked off with a freedom rally and parade. Saturday also features a youth segment, hip-hop dancing, community line dancing, multiple DJs and a performance from Soul Society.
“Faith and Family” is the theme for Sunday’s festivities. There will be a special Father’s Day opening at 1 p.m., a praise cardio session on the grass and an HBCU gospel segment. The afternoon will close with a community praise dance.
Juneteenth commemorates the day that the last slaves in the Confederacy were informed of their freedom following the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865. Long celebrated by Black Americans, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. In 2023, the Anchorage Assembly made Juneteenth an official city holiday, and in 2024, the Alaska Legislature passed a bill to designate Juneteenth as a state holiday.
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AZFamily) — A hurry to a LARPing tournament ended with a very real arrest in northern Arizona.
On June 11, troopers stopped a driver clocked at 106 mph in a 65 mph zone in Flagstaff, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The driver told troopers she was running late for a “LARPing tournament” in Colorado.
LARP stands for live-action role-playing, a hobby where participants dress in costume and act out characters in fictional settings.
She was arrested for criminal speeding and booked into the Coconino County jail.
“Speeding to save a fictional realm is no excuse for drivers on Arizona highways,” DPS said in a Facebook post.
