Update: Montgomery County Sheriff's Office provides update on missing student
At 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office distributed the following update. It appears in its entirety below.
After many long hours of tracking leads and conducting follow up investigations, Sheriff’s Office investigators were able to track Jonathan Roop to a restaurant in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on the afternoon of February 21. Mr. Roop was alone and left the restaurant when he was being identified by an employee. Roop then drove away unaccompanied in his vehicle, as seen in the photo below. Local law enforcement was alerted and attempted to locate him, without success, but continued looking today.
While there are many unanswered questions, based on this personal sighting, we believe Mr. Roop is acting alone and traveling on his own free will. We appreciate the cooperation of law enforcement organizations, businesses, and the public during this investigation.
At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office distributed the following update. It appears in its entirety below.
In regards to Jonathan “Johnny” Roop, investigators are continuing to pursue every lead; however, the preliminary investigation leads us to believe that he left the area of Montgomery County on his own Friday afternoon.
Based upon information received it is believed that he most likely traveled toward SW Virginia or Tennessee.
Investigators have been able to access video surveillance footage from local businesses/financial institutions and Mr. Roop was observed in the Christiansburg area of Montgomery County until around 3:30pm on Friday.
Based on interviews with friends and family (in addition to video surveillance) it was noted that Mr. Roop’s behavior on Friday was not consistent with his normal patterns of behavior; however, information received seems to indicate that he was alone.
We have received no information leading us to believe that he is in immediate danger; however due to the fact that Mr. Roop appears to be acting outside of his normal behavior we would like to make contact with him to confirm that he is indeed ok.

Fairfax County casino bill faces Virginia house vote Tuesday
Virginia House votes on Fairfax County casino bill
Fairfax County’s casino fight is heating up again as lawmakers in Richmond are preparing to vote on a bill that could clear the way for a vote. Opponents are making a loud final push to stop it. FOX 5’s Maureen Umeh has the latest.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – A key vote in Richmond Tuesday could move Fairfax County closer to allowing a casino, but new projections and polling are raising questions about the plan.
What we know:
FOX 5’s Maureen Umeh reports that Tuesday’s vote could determine whether Fairfax County is officially eligible to host a casino. But updated county estimates show potential revenue may be far lower than earlier projections and most voters say they’re against it.
A House committee is set to consider legislation that would make Fairfax County eligible for a casino and allow it to be built anywhere in the county, not just in Tysons.
A new draft feasibility study estimates the project could generate more than $62 million in tax revenue and nearly $314 million in gaming revenue. It also projects about 2,500 permanent jobs and hundreds of construction jobs.
But an internal county review suggests the actual revenue could be roughly half of what the state previously projected, with only a modest impact on the county budget.
Meanwhile, new polling shows 63% of Fairfax County voters oppose the casino proposal, with opposition crossing party lines.
This is the fourth year lawmakers have taken up the issue. If the bill advances, the final decision would still go to voters in a countywide referendum.
Tuesday’s committee vote is expected later in Richmond.

Key Things To Watch For Tomorrow Night As Virginia Hosts NC State
Virginia has won eight consecutive games and finds itself near the top of the ACC conference. They even were bumped up three spots in the latest AP Poll rankings to No.11 in the country. Virginia has been getting it down with a solid starting five and a bench that comes in and produces at a high level, and brings the energy and effort every night. It has made the difference for the team and has them playing at a high level. Sitting at 24-3, the Cavaliers have everything in front of them. They will face a familiar opponent on Tuesday night when they face off against NC State. Let’s take a look at some key things to watch for on Tuesday night in Charlottesville.
Round Two
The Cavaliers are looking to finish the task for the second time this season when they meet NC State. Head coach Ryan Odom knows he will see a different team compared to the one they saw at the beginning of the year on January 3rd. Here is what he said: the key difference was.
“Their lineups are a little bit different. They’re very secure with their lineup now and who they’re playing. Um and the guys are in their roles now and know exactly what they need to do for them to be successful. I think we’re at a similar point, and so it’s going to be interesting to see it play out,” said Odom.
With it being the second matchup, the Hoos will likely get the best attempt from NC State as they look to add a Quad 1 win to their resume and continue to fight for positioning in the ACC and potentially make the NCAA tournament. It won’t be easy, even with this game being played at home. Coach Odom knows the Wolfpack will have a different sense of urgency.
“They’ve been really good regardless of the court that they’ve played on. So whether it’s been at home, they’ve had some great wins or on the road, they’ve had some awesome victories as well. Just really tough environments. They’re going to be ready to play. There’s no question about it. and they have a history with us from the last game, and so they’re going to be motivated, you know, to do really well here in JPJ, and so we’ve got to be up for the fight,” said Odom.
It surely will be a fight, but Virginia has proven they can handle any challenge and have played some of their best ball in high-pressure situations. They hope to do the same on Tuesday night.
