Mikaela Shiffrin Will Not Compete at World Cup in Crans-Montana, Switzerland – SnowBrains
Mikaela’s media manager Megan Harrod confirmed in an interview with Swiss newspapers that Mikaela Shiffrin will not return to the World Cup next weekend in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Crans-Montana will host a Downhill and a Super-G race on February 17 and 18.
Shiffrin had suffered an external ligament injury in her knee during her dramatic crash in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, at the end of January.
With Shiffrin unable to return to the World Cup, Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami will have a chance to extend her lead in the season’s overall rankings. During the weekend, Gut-Behrami surpassed Shiffrin in the rankings when she won Saturday’s Giant Slalom race at Soldeu, Andorra. Gut-Behrami now leads the overall rankings with 1,214 points, five points ahead of Shiffrin who has 1,209 points. Third in the oveall rankings is Italy’s Federica Brignone with 928 points.
A victory awards a skier 100 points and there are eight races still left in the season, so there is still plenty of opportunity for skiers who compete across multiple alpine disciplines to re-shuffle the rankings. Lara Gut-Behrami competes across all disciplines except for Slalom, while Shiffrin competes across all, but may on occasion skip Downhill events in favor of training for and focussing on tech events, such as Slalom and Giant Slalom.
Gut-Behrami won the large crystal globe for overall season victor in 2015/16 and was second behind Shiffrin last season. Mikaela Shiffrin has won the overall crystal globe a total of five times (2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2021/22, and 2022/23).
There are eight races left on the Women’s FIS Alpine World Cup Calendar:

Downhill & Super-G
February 24 & 25
Val di Fassa, Italy
Super-G (2x)
