D.C.-area forecast: Warming up through Friday; occasionally rainy into the weekend


A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

6/10: We can start to shed the winter gear, as temperatures climb above normal for this time of year. Meanwhile the snow melts away, with just a few light showers during the day.

  • Today: Mostly cloudy, a few light showers. Highs: Upper 40s to mid-50s.
  • Tonight: Scattered light showers, patchy fog. Lows: Upper 40s to near 50.
  • Tomorrow: Periods of rain likely. Highs: Mid-50s to low 60s.

What snow is left will soon be gone. Our warming trend is underway with most spots reaching the mid-40s yesterday, headed for near or past 50 today, and into the 60s by Friday before a cooler weekend. Rain chances return starting today, although we may only see a few light showers, before periods of rain move through tomorrow. We should get a break with a mostly dry Friday, then rain chances rise again this weekend.

Today (Wednesday): A few light showers are possible, although much of the day should be dry. After morning temperatures rise through the 30s, afternoon highs should warm to the upper 40s to mid-50s with mostly cloudy skies and light winds. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Scattered light showers are possible this evening and overnight with patchy fog. Temperatures hover in the upper 40s to near 50 with cloudy skies as a breeze develops from the south. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): Periods of rain seem likely, probably starting early in the morning with more patchy fog possible. Some spots could see a half-inch or so, but lower and higher amounts are certainly in play. The air mass continues to warm despite the rain and cloudy skies, with afternoon highs in the mid-50s to low 60s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Occasional light showers linger as we stay mild with temperatures mainly in the 50s. Confidence: Medium

Can’t rule out a morning shower Friday, but overall the forecast is trending toward a mostly dry and perhaps even partly sunny day. Temperatures continue their steady climb with very mild highs in the 60s, or about 20 degrees above normal. Should stay dry Friday night as lows drop back into the 40s. Confidence: Medium

The weekend brings another storm and the potential for more periods of rain. Right now the most likely time for rain looks to be late Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Highs on Saturday should get to near 50, then cooler on Sunday with highs in the 40s. Confidence: Low-Medium

US Park Police officer shot in Washington, DC


A U.S. Park Police officer was shot in Washington, D.C., while on duty, according to a statement from the agency. 

Park Police said the officer was shot at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in Southeast Washington on Queens Stroll Pl.

The officer has been transported to a local hospital, officials said.

The circumstances of the shooting are unclear. A Park Police spokesperson told ABC News the officer has non-life-threatening injuries.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said on X that she has spoken to D.C. Mayor Muriel  Bowser and Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll and was briefed on the shooting.

“Please pray for the officer’s recovery,” the attorney general said.

After a very warm afternoon, there is a cold front that is approaching. The front will move through the area tonight, sparking showers and storms, then delivering colder air for the start of the new workweek.

There is a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH for our counties to the far northwest, including Maryland counties Washington, Allegany and Garrett, and a portion of Morgan county in West Virginia. The watch is until 10 p.m. Sunday.

There is a chance for storms to be severe tonight, including the risk of damaging winds and hail. The risk decreases through the night as the storms move south and east with the front. The storms may be noisy tonight with thunder, heavy rain, and hail. Expect drier conditions after sunrise tomorrow.

Do not forget your jacket Monday. The cooler air behind the front keeps the area in the 50s all day. Lows will drop into the 30s Monday night.
