Why are fewer women winning EU leadership roles?
Despite three top EU positions being held by women in this mandate, there will be fewer women in positions of power within EU institutions.
Despite Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola being presidents of the European Commission and Parliament, and Kaja Kallas expected to be confirmed as the EU’s top diplomat, gender balance as a whole across the senior positions of the institutions looks shakier.
Von der Leyen has asked the 27 member states each to propose male and female candidates for the next round of EU commissioners. So far, however, other than Finland, Spain, and Sweden, most countries appear to have ignored her.
The situation is even more concerning in the new European Parliament, which not only has fewer women than any previous legislature but also sees a lack of women in key positions of power.
