Wyoming's Fertig named Mountain West Player of the Year

LARAMIE, Wyo. — University of Wyoming senior Cowgirl Allyson Fertig was sensational for her team this year, shining on both ends of the court and helping bolster her team to the second-best record in league play. For her efforts, she was recently named the Mountain West Player of the Year.

Fertig led the conference in a bevy of statistical categories. She was the best scoring threat in the MW with 19.5 points per game, and she led the conference in rebounding by pulling down 11.5 boards per night. Her 59% field goal percentage and 2.1 blocks per contest were also tops in the conference.

This marks just the seventh time in Mountain West history that a player led in both scoring and rebounding in the same year. It’s only the second time a player led the conference in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.

And when you add her league-best block numbers too, Fertig becomes the first to lead in all four statistics.

Fertig is the fourth Cowgirl to be named her conference’s top player, joining Aubrey Vandiver, Liv Roberts and Amy Burnett.

Arguably Fertig’s best game of the season came in a Jan. 25 games against arch-rival Colorado State, in which she scored a career-best 34 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Double-doubles were no stranger to the star though, as she had 12 this season.

“Al is Wyoming,” UW head coach Heather Ezell previously said of Fertig. “She was born a Cowgirl, and she lives and dies with the brown and gold. Just to be able to coach somebody like her that has pride and understands, it hits a little different.”
