Wyoming State Geological Survey releases publicly available high-resolution geophysical data

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – This week, the Wyoming State Geological Survey announced the release of never before seen high-resolution geophysical data for Central Wyoming.

Non-scientists may be asking, what exactly is geophysical data, and how do geologists use it?

Geophysical data is used to gather information on the physical areas of the earth’s surface and what may lie beneath it. Geologists use these findings to gain a better understanding of the different types of rocks and minerals that can be found in Wyoming.

This sort of data hasn’t been collected in Wyoming since the 80s. The data was low resolution, and not the most accurate. Modern geophysical technology helps geologists today gather high resolution data and get a glimpse of what’s happening under the earth’s surface.

The geophysical data collected by the Wyoming State Geological Survey is the first publicly available study of its kind.

Geologist Ranie Lynds says, “This data is really unique. The fact that they are publicly available is really a big step towards understanding the state, promoting exploration in the state, and moving our economy in a different way.”
