CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Southeastern Wyoming, including Cheyenne and the surrounding areas, is bracing for continued dangerously cold temperatures and the possibility of moderate to heavy snowfall today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas along the Interstate 80 corridor, including Cheyenne, from noon today to 5 a.m. Wednesday. Snow is expected to develop mainly after 11 a.m., with the potential for heavy snowfall rates this afternoon and evening. Accumulation of 1–3 inches is possible during the day, with an additional 1–3 inches tonight. Wind chill values are expected to range between minus 10 and zero during the day and minus 10 to minus 15 tonight.

“The main uncertainty is exactly where these narrow bands (of the most intense snowfall) will set up,” the NWS stated in its area forecast discussion. “These narrow bands may contain 1-2+” per hour snowfall rates, low visibility under one-quarter mile, and even the potential for thundersnow.”

The NWS notes that areas along the I-80 corridor from Elk Mountain to Pine Bluffs have the highest potential for heavy snow.

Travel may become tricky as the Wyoming Department of Transportation is already reporting slick roads in the area.

In addition to the snowfall, the region remains under an Extreme Cold Warning until 11 a.m. Thursday. While temperatures are expected to remain cold, wind chills should ease slightly tonight due to lighter winds.

The extended forecast calls for a gradual warming trend beginning Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching near 60 degrees by Sunday. However, increased westerly winds are expected this weekend, with the possibility of strong winds in wind-prone areas of southeast Wyoming.
