NWS confirms an EF-1 tornado in Washington Parish

VARNADO, La. (WVUE) – A tornado with winds reaching 100 mph swept through Washington Parish early Sunday, toppling trees and leaving a path of damage south of Varnado.

The National Weather Service confirmed the EF-1 tornado traveled 4.46 miles, touching down at 12:27 a.m. and lifting seven minutes later at 12:34 a.m.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The tornado first made contact near Lon Miley Road, where it sporadically snapped young pine trees. As it moved northeast, it strengthened, crossing Louisiana Highway 21 just south of Varnado.

In this area, the storm uprooted larger pine trees and produced a visible tornado debris signature on radar at 12:33 a.m., according to the NWS.
