Midshipman shot during police response to Naval Academy threat
A midshipman was shot at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland Thursday evening as law enforcement responded to reports of threats made to the military school, a source told NBC News.
There is no active shooter, the source said.
The midshipman was sheltering in place on the Annapolis campus when they mistook a member of law enforcement as a threat and hit them with a training weapon, said the source, who was on campus at the time of the lockdown. Police responded by shooting the midshipman.
The midshipman was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, the source said. Video from Chopper4 shows one person on a gurney being placed on a Maryland State Police helicopter.
The academy worked with local law enforcement to respond to the reports of threats, Lt. Naweed Lemar, the spokesperson for the base that hosts the academy, said in a statement.
“The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution,” he said. “This is a developing situation and we will provide updates as they become available.”
Gov. Wes Moore’s office released a statement saying there was “currently no credible threat to the Naval Academy.”
The campus is still being swept.
Police were near Bancroft Hall, which houses midshipmen in its more than 1,600 dorm rooms. It is considered the biggest single college dormitory in the world, according to the school’s website.
Earlier Thursday, a bomb threat at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in D.C. was deemed “not credible.”
Several historically black colleges and universities received threats Thursday, including two Virginia schools. The threats come a day after MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at an event at a university in Utah.
