Local college basketball roundup: Christopher Newport men deny Mary Washington’s late comeback attempt in victory
Collin Hines scored 16 points, Jahn Hines had 15 and No. 25 Christopher Newport held on despite nearly letting a seven-point lead slip away in the final 3 minutes of a 59-57 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg.
Trey Barber added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ian Anderson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Captains (15-4), who have won three straight and eight of nine.
Collin Hines’ two free throws with 2:57 left gave CNU a 59-52 lead, but Mary Washington (9-5) scored five straight points to make it 59-57 with 46 seconds left. The Eagles had three chances to tie or take the lead, but misfired each time.
Daniel Peterson paced Mary Washington with 18 points and nine rebounds.
CNU will host Warren Wilson at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Guilford 77, Virginia Wesleyan 44: Tyler Dearman scored 19 points and No. 8 Guilford outshot and outrebounded Virginia Wesleyan decisively in an ODAC victory in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Quakers (15-2, 6-2), who dropped from No. 2 in last week’s D3hoops.com poll after falling to Randolph-Macon on Saturday, bounced back by shooting 48.3% from the field and hitting 11 of 22 3-pointers.
The Marlins (14-4, 5-4), who have dropped two straight, shot 32% from the field and went 4 of 25 from 3-point range for 16%.
Guilford also outrebounded VWU 41-25.
Jordan Crump was the only Marlins player to reach double figures with 10 points. Amarion Wilson had six points and eight rebounds.
VWU will host Randolph College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Women
Christopher Newport 80, Meredith College 29: Caitlin Crump scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures and No. 5 Christopher Newport rolled at home for its sixth straight victory.
Jessica Dornak (14), Elizabeth Creed (13), Mia Wilson (12) and Hailey Kellogg (11) also hit double digits for the Captains (18-1), who led 20-8 after the first quarter and 37-14 at the half.
CNU outrebounded Meredith 58-38 and forced 39 turnovers, which led to 36 points.
The Captains will host Warren Wilson at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Guilford 81, Virginia Wesleyan 52: Courtney McMillan scored 14 points to lead a balanced attack as Guilford handed Virginia Wesleyan its ninth straight loss.
Juliana Anderson paced the Marlins (3-12) with 14 points.
Guilford forced 31 VWU turnovers.
The Marlins will visit Randolph College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
