UK police investigating uranium-tainted cargo at Heathrow

LONDON — (AP) — British counterterrorism police are investigating after border officers seized cargo contaminated with uranium at London’s Heathrow Airport.

The Metropolitan Police pressure mentioned Wednesday that “a really small quantity of contaminated materials was recognized after routine screening inside a package deal incoming to the U.Ok.” on Dec. 29.

It mentioned the pressure’s Counterterrorism Command is investigating. There have been no arrests.

The BBC reported that the uranium was in a cargo of scrap steel.

Police Commander Richard Smith mentioned the quantity of contaminated materials was “extraordinarily small and has been assessed by specialists as posing no menace to the general public.”

He mentioned it “doesn’t look like linked to any direct menace,” however the investigation continues.
