Taylor Swift fans literally move earth for superstar during Seattle shows
SEATTLE, Washington — Taylor Swift and her fans are just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.
Swift, who has been setting all kinds of records during her mammoth “Eras” tour, added a unique one to the list by causing seismic activity during recent shows in Seattle.
Western Washington University geology professor Jackie Caplan-Auerbach tells the Seattle Times that Swift’s shows at Lumen Field registered 2.3 on the Richter scale. USA Today reports the seismic activity was a combination of dancing fans and the sound system from the concert.
The concerts caused more seismic activity than the infamous “Beast quake” from 2011, when Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch scored on a 67-yard run against the New Orleans Saints in an NFL playoff game. That registered a 2.0.
“The shaking was twice as strong as ‘Beast Quake’. It absolutely doubled it,” Caplan-Auerbach tells CNN.
Caplan-Auerbach also noted the activity caused by the Swift concerts was sustained over a longer period of time.
“The primary difference is the duration of shaking,” Caplan-Auerbach tells CNN. “Cheering after a touchdown lasts for a couple seconds, but eventually it dies down. It’s much more random than a concert. For Taylor Swift, I collected about 10 hours of data where rhythm controlled the behavior. The music, the speakers, the beat. All that energy can drive into the ground and shake it.”
Swift will close out the U.S. portion of her tour next week with six shows in Los Angeles. In 2024 she will perform in Singapore, Japan, Australia, and Europe.
