Flooding, Evacuations, Roads Closed, Power Outages: Storm Wallops Area

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA — A powerful storm pushed by high winds and downpours falling on already saturated ground is causing damage from the North Bay to the Monterey Peninsula, with some residents fleeing their homes under evacuation orders due to flooding.

Those dry in their homes may not be as warm as preferred as some 50,000 customers are without electricity. PG&E alone had more than 44,000 customers offline at around 10 a.m. Several Bay Area cities have their own municipal power companies, and also report problems due to downed poles and power lines. At the noon hour, Fremont, Santa Cruz and Monterey were experiencing the largest outages. By 1 p.m., Rohnert Park and Monterey were hardest hit.

The biggest immediate threat to life is in Monterey County where the Carmel River is flooding. Several communities along with river have been ordered to evacuate immediately.

Other Monterey County residents have been ordered to shelter-in-place because of a mass movement of falling rock.

The National Weather Service warned last night of hurricane-force winds in that vicinity.

The final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, one of the most prestigious professional golf tournaments on the PGA Tour, was postponed until Monday.

Travel is difficult as multiple roads are closed, the Bay Bridge has an extreme wind warning, and BART reports that trains are moving slower than normal due to the storm.

In San Francisco, a hillside has collapsed at Market and 18th streets, in addition to earlier problems.
