Newsom Seeks Presidential Major Disaster Declaration For Storm Damage

SAN DIEGO, CA — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday requested a presidential major disaster declaration after late January’s powerful winter storm devastated San Diego County.

In a letter directed to President Joe Biden through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Newsom requested an official disaster declaration to help the San Diego region recover from the deadly and destructive Jan. 21-23 storm.

“The late January storm saw record-breaking rain in San Diego, where the worst impacts were felt in lower-income neighborhoods,” Newsom said in a statement. “Many folks saw damage to their life’s work that can’t be recovered without federal support.

“I’m requesting a major disaster declaration from President Biden to support communities in San Diego that were hit hard last month.”

The National Weather Service reported Jan. 22 as San Diego’s wettest January day on record and fourth wettest day overall since 1850.

The widespread flooding and devastation killed three people and damaged more than 800 homes in primarily underserved communities where flood insurance coverage is exceptionally low, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

If approved, the disaster declaration would help San Diego residents through eligibility for programs and support that can include housing assistance, vehicle replacement, food aid, counseling, medical services and legal services, according to the governor’s office.
