Local siblings take top spots at 2024 MTAC San Diego Concerto Competition

Siblings Anthony and Elisha Kim shone brightly at the recent 2024 Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) San Diego Concerto Competition.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Penn., Anthony, currently a sophomore at Torrey Pines High School, and Elisha, a seventh grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, each clinched first place in their respective divisions, according to a news release.

As a reward for their outstanding performances, Anthony and Elisha are granted the exceptional opportunity to play alongside the MiraCosta Oceanside Symphony Orchestra. These performances, led by Brandon Muresan, are scheduled for March 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College (1 Barnard Dr., Oceanside).

“Winning this competition is a significant milestone in my journey as a violinist. I want to express my gratitude to my music teachers, family, and supporters for their invaluable contribution to my growth,” said Anthony in the news release.

The siblings will showcase their award-winning pieces at the concerts. Elisha will perform the first movement of Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5, a composition noted for its expressive beauty and technical demands. Anthony will interpret the first movement of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D Minor, a piece acclaimed for its emotional intensity and virtuosic requirements.

This triumph “underscores the significance of supporting emerging talent and the role that competitions play in offering a stage for young artists to flourish. It also reflects the dedication and guidance of their mentors, teachers, and family members,” the news release stated.

The local community is encouraged to experience the artistry of these young virtuosos as they perform with the MiraCosta Oceanside Symphony Orchestra.
