San Diego police are searching for the person or persons who fatally shot a teen on the southbound Interstate 5 on-ramp adjacent to Chicano Park early Sunday morning.

Homicide detectives said an 18-year-old man was brought to Paradise Valley Hospital in National City about 2:10 a.m. by several men in a private car. The group flagged down a police officer and told the officer the teen in the car had been shot on the Logan Avenue ramp.

The victim was rushed into the hospital and CPR was started, but he could not be revived, Lt. Lou Maggi said in a statement.

At first, the investigation into the fatal shooting was conducted by the California Highway Patrol because it was thought to have occurred on the I-5 on-ramp. However, after CHP officers determined the shots likely came from Chicano Park, SDPD detectives assumed responsibility for the investigation, Maggi said.

Investigators found that earlier on Sunday, San Diego patrol officers had responded to three reports of gunfire near Chicano Park — one at 12:12 a.m., one at 1:08 a.m. and one at 2:06 a.m. Nothing was found by officers after the first and third reports but police found “multiple cartridge casings” and a vehicle that had been struck several times by gunfire while investigating the second report, Maggi said.

The name of the man who died has not been released, although he has been tentatively identified, Maggi said. No suspect information was released.

Maggi said the investigation was ongoing, with detectives looking for evidence at the crime scene and seeking witnesses. They also are checking if any surveillance video in the area was taken that captured any of the shootings. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
