Girl rescued from sand hole at Mission Beach
A team of San Diego lifeguards and firefighters rescued a girl trapped neck-deep in sand after a hole she had been digging with friends collapsed on her at Mission Beach Tuesday afternoon.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifeguards received a call around 5 p.m. that a 16-year-old girl had been trapped in a hole dug by a group of teenagers about 8 to 10 feet deep near Ocean Front Walk north of Lifeguard Tower 13.
“She was up to her armpits and her friends tried to dig her out but sand kept falling in since the hole wasn’t wide,” Fire-Rescue spokesperson Mónica Muñoz said Wednesday.
First responders called to the scene worked quickly to make the hole wider to prevent the girl from being further buried, Muñoz said.
After a few minutes, the girl was removed from the hole.
The teen was not injured and later released to a guardian, Muñoz said.
