OBITUARY

Edward R. Jahn, a 54-year San Diego resident, died October 15, 2024 at the age of 83. He is remembered by Leni, his beloved wife of 59 years, daughters Susan (Max) Bristol, Stephanie (David) Casperson and grandchild Cas Bristol. Also surviving are his sister Carol (Larry) Simpson and nieces and nephews. An unabashed cat lover, Ed is missed by his kitties Seti and Tau.

Ed was born in St. Louis, MO in 1941 and spent most of his youth in Los Angeles where he developed a lifelong love of sports, maintaining a readily-quotable internal database of player statistics. He loved to sit at a Padres game with Leni, hear the crack of bat on ball and record the plays in his old-school playbook.

After high school, Ed graduated from UCLA in 1963. That fall, while working on a Master’s degree in engineering, he met Verlene “Leni” Seifert at the UCLA Masonic Affiliate Club. They dated for two years before marrying in 1965. He completed his MS in 1967 while beginning his 36-year US Navy civilian career at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in Pasadena. After becoming a father to Susan in March, 1969, Ed volunteered for a four-month civilian position in Vietnam. This experience was useful in obtaining his second Master’s from USC in Operations Research (Engineering). In May, 1971, he welcomed his second daughter, Stephanie and moved his family to San Diego. Continuing his career as a US Navy civil service engineer and manager, he received the Naval Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1997. He lived in University City continuously until his death, residing at Atria Senior Living during his last years.

Ed loved to travel. He and Leni explored throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. For the past 28 years, time spent at their mountain cabin was treasured by the family.

Throughout adulthood, Ed dedicated his caring spirit and open heart to his church community, volunteering, singing in the choir and worshipping with the congregation.

For a number of years, Ed was a volunteer tax preparer with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Other community involvement included serving as an officer of the San Diego chapter of the National Assn of Active and Retired Federal Employees.

Ed was a 32 Mason. In 2015, he was Master of Kadosh, Consistory, for the Scottish Rite Valley of San Diego and earned a 50-year pin for his dedication to the craft. In 2017, the Joseph L. Shell Daylight Lodge No. 837 honored Ed with the Hiram Award.
