Cautious Padres put Clevinger (triceps) on IL
The San Diego Padres positioned right-hander Mike Clevinger on the 15-day injured listing Sunday due to a triceps pressure. The transfer was made retroactive to Saturday.
Clevinger, who did not pitch final season after recovering from his second Tommy John surgical procedure, stated he felt tightness within the space of his proper triceps after pitching 5 scoreless innings final Tuesday towards the Philadelphia Phillies.
“It is somewhat spot in his triceps that is not dangerous,” supervisor Bob Melvin advised reporters, in response to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “However we have come up to now with him and he was so good final trip, we simply don’t need any hiccups. … He needs to pitch, however we simply don’t need any setbacks with him. It is too early within the season to attempt to push him at this level.”
Clevinger, who’s 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in three begins this season, can be shut down for a number of days earlier than he resumes throwing, Melvin stated.
Proper-hander Nick Martinez will take Clevinger’s spot within the rotation whereas he is sidelined. Martinez, who had been within the Padres’ rotation earlier than Clevinger and Blake Snell made their season debuts, is 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA this season in seven appearances (six begins).
