I-TEAM: Broken elevator strands residents in Oregon senior facility

OREGON, Ohio (WTVG) – There’s a real worry about some seniors not getting to medical appointments in Oregon because the only elevator at the Oregon Senior Lofts hasn’t been working for a few weeks. People living there aren’t sure when it will be fixed.

Residents believe this all started with a lightning strike two weeks ago. Now the issues are only getting worse.

You can’t tell from the outside, but the only elevator at the Oregon Senior Lofts on Navarre Avenue doesn’t work. It used to be a real help for residents like Edwin Offet.

“I moved here because of the elevator and because I couldn’t do stairs anymore,” said Offet.

He’s lucky living on the second floor, as he’s now able to handle a flight of stairs.

Diane Angelocci’s sister cannot because she needs wheelchair.

“It’s just like ‘what is she going to do.? How long can she go without going to the doctor? What can we do about this,’” said Angelocci.

This is not simply an inconvenience. People living here are missing doctor appointments.

“That week she had two doctor appointments she could not go to. She has one this week she’s not going to. Next week on Monday, she’s supposed to have a procedure done at the hospital which she had to cancel because she does not think it’ll be working,” said Angelocci.

Residents say information on a fix is sparse.

“They keep saying they’re working on it,” said Offet. “I don’t know what to believe at this point.”

Something as simple as getting mail isn’t possible for people who can’t take the steps. Those living here or with a loved one here hope this gets fixed and quickly.

“She’s really isolated. Nobody feels they can get up to her place. ‘Well then, invite them up to your place.’ She says ‘Diane they can’t get up here either, they have wheelchairs too,’” said Angelocci.

The I-TEAM made several calls to management Tuesday, even to the corporate office in Cincinnati. We have not received a response yet.
