Judge OKs shooting of New Mexico wild cattle
Federal officers on Thursday started capturing cattle in New Mexico’s Gila Nationwide Forest. The New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Affiliation and the Humane Farming Affiliation had sued to delay plans of the U.S. Forest Service and the Animal and Plant Well being Inspection Service. Federal officers deliberate to shoot an estimated 150 cattle from a helicopter in an operation lasting by Saturday.
Why shoot the cattle? The Forest Service says the stray cattle have been a difficulty since a rancher deserted a herd within the space again within the Nineteen Seventies. They are saying the herd has been trampling stream banks, polluting the water, overgrazing, and typically charging hikers. Ranchers argued in court docket Wednesday that the capturing was a violation of federal rules and amounted to animal cruelty. Attorneys for the ranchers estimated 65 tons of lifeless cattle could be left to decompose within the wild.
