Alianza of New Mexico hosting second annual World AIDS Day event in Las Cruces
Each year on Dec. 1, the world remembers those lost to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and raises awareness of the ongoing pandemic.
Alianza of New Mexico, an advocacy and supportive organization for those impacted by AIDS, is hosting Las Cruces’ second annual World AIDS Day event Friday at Pioneer Women’s Park. The theme this year is “Remember and Commit.”
“The impact of this epidemic has been profound, affecting individuals, families, and entire communities across the globe. Remembering the lives lost not only honors their memory but also emphasizes the urgency of our commitment to end the HIV epidemic,” the news release reads.
Jesus Altamirano of Alianza said the driving factors behind the event this year are to increase awareness of the illness, end stigma and discrimination against those living with the virus and improve healthcare accessibility, supportive services and prevention.
According to a news release from Alianza, Obiefuna Okoli, an infectious disease physician in Las Cruces, will speak at the event, along with Doña Ana County Commissioner Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez. Other speakers include locals who are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Organizers will hold a moment of silence and a vigil walk around the park in honor of those who have died from HIV.
Members of the public are welcome to join Friday’s event which will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Pioneer Women’s Park, located at 500 W. Las Cruces Ave. Hot chocolate, coffee and pastries will be provided to attendees.
