ELY, Nev. — A longstanding tradition for the Nevada Northern Railway Museum will be held again this fall. The 2023 Iron Horse Symposium is scheduled from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 as an immersive experience with steam locomotives Nos. 81 and 93 in operation alongside the museum’s other historic equipment, including vintage Alco and Baldwin diesel locomotives and steam wrecking derrick “A” that will provide demonstrations.

This year’s theme centers around the early years of the Nevada Northern from 1900 to 1920. Activities during the 4-day event are scheduled to include:

  • Presentations shedding light on the railway’s unfolding that’ll feature multiple guest speakers, including Ann Requa – granddaughter of Mark Requa, the builder of the Nevada Northern Railway.
  • The Sunset, Stars and Champagne Train excursion with drinks, finger foods and a panel discussion titled, “Is this any way to run a railroad?”
  • Photo shoots and tours of the museum’s East Ely Yard, followed by a train ride to the White Pine Public Museum.

Registration for the Iron Horse Symposium is now available with ticket prices ranging from $233.75 for members, to $275 for non-members. Amenities will include access to all presentations, yard tours and photo shoots, two train rides, and continental breakfasts and lunches. Optional add-on tours are also provided, ranging from the Haunted Ghost Train to a visit to the Robinson Copper Mine, and only available to registered participants of the symposium.
