UM officials issue alert about bear activity on campus

MISSOULA, Mont. — University of Montana officials sent out an alert about three different reports of bear activity happening on the south side of campus Saturday.

The reports featured a black bear getting to garbage located between Pantzer Hall and the Military and Veterans Office.

Officials have notified Montana Fish and Game officials, and advise the public to stay observant when in the area.

The University of Montana shared bear encounter safety tips below.

The University of Montana released the following information:

On Saturday, May 27, 2023 there have been three different reportings of bear activity on the south side of campus between Pantzer Hall and the Veteran services bulding. The reports indicate a black bear getting into garbages. This message is being sent more out of a caution for anyone in that area to stay observant. Montana Fish and Game officials were advised.

These messages are being sent only when there is reported bear activity that is impacting the safety of campus and anyone who is in the area. UMPD encourages everyone to be to be “Bear Aware”. Please call UMPD at (406) 243-4000 or 911 in the event you encounter a bear. This information will be forwarded to FWP to assist their efforts in relocation. Below are some safety tips for bear encounters:

• Bears that are agitated may appear to be non-threatening or passive at first.
• Bears that are agitated may snap or pop their jaws and make a woofing sound.
• Do not run. This may incite a predatory chase response.
• Continue to face the bear and back away slowly, talking calmly to identify yourself as a human.
• If the bear continues to approach, try to scare it away by making yourself as large and imposing as possible by stretching your arms overhead and making loud noises.
