Montana soccer falls to Northern Arizona in Big Sky Conference tourney semifinal

MISSOULA — The top-seeded Montana women’s soccer team fell to fourth-seeded Northern Arizona, 1-0, in a Big Sky Conference tourney semifinal Friday night in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Grizzlies were unbeaten in Big Sky regular-season play at 7-0-1, but they couldn’t come up with a goal in their tournament opener. Northern Arizona (11-5-3) advanced to play second-seeded Idaho (11-4-2) in the championship on Sunday afternoon.

Allison Veloz scored the only goal on an assist by Maddie Shafer in the 21st minute. Montana keeper Ashlyn Dvorak stopped four of five shots on goal by the Lumberjacks.

Montana finished with a 12-5 edge in shots on goal and a 25-10 edge in shots overall. Trinity Corcoran shut out the Grizzlies in net for the Lumberjacks.

The loss marked Montana’s first in 54 days. The Grizzlies finished with a record of 13-3-3.
