Idaho is one of the top landing spots for high-earning members of a particular generation
Idaho is gaining high-earning millennials at the ninth-highest rate in the country, according to a new study.
Financial insights website SmartAsset used nationwide IRS tax data to study where millennials with an annual household income above $200,000 are moving, and Idaho was one of the top 10 choices.
While 1,067 high-earning millennial households settled in Idaho between 2021 and 2022, only 461 left. Its overall gain of 606 such millennials was the ninth-highest of any state.
STATES WHERE HIGH-EARNING MILLENNIALS ARE MOVING
According to the study, the states seeing the highest influx of high-earning millennials were: (net gain):
-
1. Florida (6,188)
-
2. Texas (5,151)
-
3. North Carolina (1,970)
-
4. Colorado (1,227)
-
5. Tennessee (1,197)
-
6. South Carolina (1,068)
-
7. Georgia (895)
-
8. Arizona (668)
-
9. Idaho (606)
-
10. Nevada (510)
Florida’s net gain of high-earning millennial households was over 10 times more than the Gem State. Those households earn $551,114 per year on average in Florida, and $450,278 in Idaho.
The Gem State also retained approximately 11,997 millennial households making over $200,000 a year. The percentage of high-earning households that are millennials in Idaho is 19.5%.
To determine these rankings, SmartAsset examined the factors leading to millennials’ moving patterns. This includes IRS data for 2021 and 2022 (the most recently available) for households between ages 26 and 45 making $200,000 or more. The net migration of these “high-earning households” was determined by comparing the inflow of qualifying households in each state to the outflow. The average adjusted gross income for each state’s households within these criteria was also considered.
STATES WHERE HIGH-EARNING MILLENNIALS ARE LEAVING
California took first place for the state that high-earning millennials are leaving, with a net loss of 9,181 households, followed by New York and Illinois. Washington’s overall loss of 222 high-earning millennials was the eighth-highest of any state.
Here’s the entire bottom 10 (net loss):
Despite the loss, the Golden State remains one of the top states for high-earning millennials. California retained 589,524 millennial households making over $200,000 a year.

What channel is Wyoming vs. Idaho on today? Time, TV schedule to watch Week 2 college football game | Sporting News
Wyoming will be looking to shake off the sting of a blowout loss when it takes the field against Idaho in Week 2.
The Cowboys got smacked in their season opener, falling to Arizona State on the road by a final score of 48-7. Starting quarterback Evan Svoboda struggled to generate any offensive flow, completing just six passes for 42 yards with two interceptions.
Unlike last week, Wyoming will be the favorite heading into this matchup, but it can’t overlook a tough Idaho squad. The Vandals gave Oregon, a national title contender, everything it could handle in a close 24-14 loss.
If the Cowboys aren’t fully focused on the task in front of them, we could see an FCS upset on Saturday.

Things to watch: Idaho has opportunity for FCS-FBS upset against Wyoming
Sep. 6—MOSCOW, Idaho — Jay Sawvel, who oversaw one of the best Mountain West Conference defenses last year as Wyoming’s defensive coordinator, when the Cowboys compiled a 9-4 record and won a bowl game against Toledo, became the new head coach following the season.
After the Cowboys were rolled 48-7 by Arizona State in their opening game last week, he got a death threat.
So, coach, how do you like running a program so far?
Wyoming might feel some urgency to get the ship righted this week when Idaho comes to town. But the Vandals gave third-ranked Oregon a scare before falling 24-14 in their opener.
Idaho, despite being a 7 1/2 -point underdog against the Cowboys, certainly sees Wyoming as an opportunity to close the deal against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The Vandals did so last year against Mountain West member Nevada, winning 33-6. Doing so again would show the seventh-ranked FCS Vandals are a legitimate title contender.
Here are three story lines to look for when the Vandals and Cowboys meet in Laramie.
1. Which Wyoming defense shows up? Sawvel, as a former defensive coordinator, could be expected to ensure the Cowboys remain strong on that side of the ball. Three were named to the preseason Mountain West all-conference team. Defensive tackle Jordan Berrtagnole had 60 tackles last year, with two sacks for loss and a forced fumble. Also earning preseason honors were linebacker Shae Suiaunoa and safety Wyett Ekeler. Ekeler lived up to billing with nine tackles against ASU.
The Cowboys, however, gave up 48 straight points before finally getting into the end zone late in the fourth quarter. If that defense shows up, new Idaho starting quarterback Jack Wagner may announce himself with a flourish. Wagner, who went through preseason camp with the Vandals with Jack Layne, came on for mop-up duty after Layne broke his collarbone late in the fourth quarter against Oregon. In practice Wagner has shown an ability to make all the throws in Idaho’s offense, and he is by far the quickest of Idaho’s four QBs.
2. If Idaho’s defense could slow down Oregon, can it overwhelm an unimpressive Wyoming offense? The Cowboys only scored against the Sun Devils when freshman receiver Chris Durr Jr. hauled in a pass from backup Wyoming quarterback Kaden Anderson late in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys went without preseason all-conference tight end John Michael Gyllenborg, who is also on the John Mackey Award watch list. He was out with a leg injury, and there was no word from Wyoming whether he will be back against Idaho. The Vandals are loaded at tight end, led by redshirt junior Jake Cox, who took a 36-yard flea flicker from Layne for Idaho’s first touchdown against Oregon.
3. Watch for the Wildcat. Vandals redshirt junior running back Elisha Cummings triggered Idaho’s second touchdown against Oregon when, as a Wildcat quarterback, he pitched to Layne for the Vandals’ second score. His portfolio as a Wildcat has been expanded. In practice this week, he threw a pretty 20-yard pass to Wagner, who cruised into the end zone.
