New effort to bring Hawaii’s native crow back to the wild

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – There’s a new effort to bring back native Alala birds to Maui, according to The Board of Land and Natural Resources.

The species went extinct in the wild 20 years ago.

A previous reintroduction project was halted on Hawaii Island five years ago largely because the native Hawaiian hawk, a natural predator, was preying on the birds.

The BLNR plans to release Alala birds on Maui, where there are no hawks.
