HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Monday marks what would have been the 95th birthday of human rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Local civil rights advocates will host a parade and rally on Oahu beginning at 9 a.m. from Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani Park.

Alphonso Braggs, president of the Honolulu branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Dr. Adam Robinson, director of the Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System and this year’s recipient of the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, joined HNN’s Sunrise Weekends to talk about Dr. King’s legacy and how Hawaii inspired his work.

“Dr. King visited Hawaii twice and was the first non-government official to address the legislature after statehood,” Braggs said. “His message of global peace and the need for love for all mankind still resonates with today’s generation.”
