HONOLULU — The Department of Defense Hawaii Emergency Management Agency announced in a news release that the monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System will sound on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. HI-EMA will also test the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System.

Statewide Outdoor Warning Sirens will sound a one-minute “Attention Alert Signal (steady tone)” at roughly the same time as the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System in cooperation with Hawaii’s broadcast industry. No exercise or drill will accompany the test, according to the release.

The all-hazard Outdoor Siren Warning System is part of Hawaii’s Statewide Alert and Warning System used to notify the public during emergencies. If the siren is heard at any time other than during the monthly test, HI-EMA advises the public to follow emergency information and instructions provided by official government channels. These could be through local radio, television station broadcasts, or a mobile Wireless Emergency Alert. The Wireless Emergency Alert delivers sound and text warnings to compatible mobile cellular phones.

People in areas surrounding Campbell Industrial Park may also hear a “whooping” tone following the siren test. The “whooping” tone is a test of the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) siren warning group that would be activated should an actual HAZMAT incident occur that requires emergency notification.
