Maui County expands ADU rules, boosts housing opportunities
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The County of Maui has adopted new housing rules to create more opportunities for local families.
Qualifying residentially zoned properties on Maui can now be eligible for up to two accessory dwellings in addition to a primary residence.
Previously, the number of permitted accessory dwellings, known as ‘ohana units, varied based on lot size and island location.
“Keeping our families home requires pursuing every practical solution available,” Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said. “This ordinance is another step toward increasing our housing inventory, creating more homes for local families, and making it easier for future generations to stay and live in the communities they love.”
Effective July 8, key changes under the new ordinance include:
- Allowing up to two accessory dwellings on qualifying residentially zoned lots countywide.
- Expanding eligibility to certain residentially zoned properties within project districts where accessory dwellings were previously not permitted.
- Creating a consistent countywide standard for Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
- Supporting additional long-term housing opportunities for local families, caregivers, workforce residents, and multigenerational households.
The County ordinance was adopted in response to Act 39, a state law requiring counties to allow up to two accessory dwelling units, or the reasonable equivalent, on qualifying lots.
According to Maui County Code Title 19, accessory dwellings are allowed mainly in Residential and Rural zoning districts and are typically excluded in Agricultural, Commercial, and Industrial zoning districts.
Added units are not permitted to be used as vacation rentals, short-term rentals, or bed-and-breakfast operations.

KAPA‘A (HawaiiNewsNow) – An emergency water line repair closed one southbound lane of Kūhiō Highway in Kapaʻa on Tuesday.
The closure was initially reported at 10:30 a.m. affecting the stretch between Uhelekawawa Canal Bridge and Hoi Road, near Safeway and Ross Dress for Less.
The Kauaʻi Department of Water is currently working on repairs.
The department said 1:45 p.m. crews discovered a second leak in the line.
Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra travel time.
Traffic control personnel and flaggers are directing traffic in the area.

Tracking the tropics: Hawaii on alert for tropical impacts while Atlantic disturbances churn
The FOX Forecast Center is tracking multiple areas for tropical development across the Atlantic and Pacific basins as peak hurricane season gears up. FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross joins us live to give an exclusive break down on the latest tropical trends:
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hundred of thousands of juror questionnaires are being sent out to Hawaii residents for potential jury service in 2027.
More than 333,000 juror questionnaires will be mailed to randomly selected individuals who either have a Hawaii state driver’s license or are registered to vote in the state.
It breaks down to about 126,300 Oahu residents, 77,200 in Maui County, 82,800 on Hawaii Island, and 47,100 on Kauai.
Questionnaires must completed and returned it to the Jury Pool Office for the corresponding circuit within 10 days, using the envelope provided.
Failure to respond may lead to a penalty.
To be excused due to a disability, submit a physician’s certificate describing how the disability affects the person’s ability to serve.
Those who have already served as a paneled juror in state or federal court in Hawaii within the past 12 months are eligible for a one-year exemption.
The Hawaii Judiciary is warning the public to watch out for scammers purporting to come from the government.
The Judiciary will not call or send emails about bench warrants or missed jury duty summonses.
All official communication is conducted through U.S. mail, unless in response after reaching out to the Judiciary directly.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged not to answer questions or divulge any personal information.
Be careful when dealing with potential emails that appear to come from the State Judiciary. Do not click on any links or send a reply, and delete the email immediately.
