LGBT-plus advocates push for voters to solidify Hawaii’s same-sex marriage rights

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – LGBT-plus supporters spoke of the importance of a question on the November ballot about whether to rescind Article 23 from the state constitution at the old Varsity building on University on Friday night.

That’s the amendment that gave the state legislature the power to legalize same-sex marriage in 2013.

The gay community fought for that power for years, but now, supporters want it removed so a future legislature can’t change the marriage laws.

“Especially now, now that we see that relying on a Supreme Court precedent can come back to bite you, we see like in Arizona a law from 150 years ago is being used to deny people the right to an abortion, we don’t want a constitutional amendment from 25 years ago or 50 years ago in 25 years in the future to affect the right of people to marry,” Coalition Chair Jeff Hong said.

The group Pride365 is urging people not to leave the ballot question blank in November because doing so counts as a no-vote.
