Community, political leaders celebrate life of former Hawaii Island Mayor Billy Kenoi
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A celebration of life is planned for William “Billy” Punapaiaala Kenoi, the former mayor of Hawaii County.
Kenoi died in 2021 at 52 years old.
Kenoi gained followers around the state for his tell-it-like-it-is style, his endless love for the place he called home, and as an inspiring orator, died at home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Three years after her husband’s passing, Takako Kenoi hopes to bring the community together to celebrate his life with music, food and conversation.
“It will be three years on Friday, and because of COVID, we couldn’t have any official funeral,” she said.
“We are inviting everyone to come share stories, listen to music and just celebrate Billy’s life.”
The celebration will be more of a gathering rather than a ceremony, with Hawaii musicians playing throughout the day and light pups available for those in attendance.
