Ceremony in Honolulu pays tribute to 9/11 victims, first responders
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A somber remembrance took place in Downtown Honolulu on Thursday to pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The ceremony was held at Tamarind Park and honored the memory of the victims killed, and the heroism of the first responders in Manhattan, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, including at least nine with ties to Hawaii:
- Christine Snyder, 32
- David Laychak, 40
- Georgine Corrigan, 56
- Heather Malia Ho, 32
- Richard Keane, 54
- Maile Hale, 26
- Michael Collins, 38
- Patricia Colodner, 39
- Richard, Y.C. Lee, 34
Attendees included Hawaii Gov. Josh Green and Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.
“We will forever be honored by you,” Green said. “Thank you for being firefighters and medics, paramedics, police officers, thank you, thank you for your service. We celebrate today in your honor and in remembrance of all those we lost.”
This year marks the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
“The lessons of that day endure now and forever,” Blangiardi said. “They remind us of the importance of standing together, of caring for one another. never allow division to fear or divide us.”
