Dozens of wild horses die in Colorado after disease outbreak at federal facility

An unknown and extremely contagious illness has killed dozens of untamed horses at a federal holding facility in Colorado, officers mentioned.

Bureau of Land Administration (BLM) officers mentioned 67 horses have died because the outbreak started Saturday on the company’s holding pen in Canon Metropolis, about 150 miles southwest of Denver.

“That is numerous fatalities to have in a comparatively brief period of time at a facility like this,” Steven Corridor, with the Bureau of Land Administration Colorado, advised FOX31 Denver.

Corridor mentioned it’s unclear what’s killing the horses right now and that blood assessments and autopsies are being carried out on some horses.

The ability, which is underneath voluntary quarantine, presently holds 2,550 horses. BLM officers mentioned the horses which were most affected by the illness had been gathered from the West Douglas space final fall.

“These are horses that had been faraway from a wild setting,” Corridor advised the station. “So their publicity to among the ailments and points that home horses are higher ready for is perhaps totally different and that is perhaps a part of what the issue is.”
