Thousands of DUIs issues since the legalization of marijuana in Colorado
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Sergeant Patrick Rice with the Colorado State Patrol says although the state has made serious progress when it comes to detecting and enforcing driving under the influence of marijuana they still have a long way to go.
“We still have a long way to go as you can see on our roads we still have many many impaired drivers killing people drivers in Colorado nearly every day,” Rice said.
Just last year there were 235 crashes caused by impaired driving in El Paso County. Tied with 2022 but the highest number the county has seen in the last ten years. Rice says over the years he has learned key differences to spot drivers who are driving while high.
“Many of the dangers of the same it’s a slow, cognitive decision making abilities. It’s your abilities to see down the road and acknowledge a threat and respond,” Rice said.
Rice says one danger high drivers pose on the roads is that they often think they are operating normally, not recognizing the impairment before getting behind the wheel.
“Impairment is impairment, whether it’s on marijuana or alcohol or anything else,” Rice said.
If you are suspected of driving impaired under the influence of anything other than alcohol authorities will ask you to take a blood test.

The graffiti at Lake Pueblo State Park will be cleaned up. Boaters started noticing the vandalism on a specific area of the rocks at the lake last summer.
Removing the graffiti from the rocks requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife to seek help from other companies to prevent chemicals from getting into the water. The area is set to be cleaned in the near future.
“A lot of us have grown up coming to state parks throughout Colorado and Lake Pueblo specifically. This place kind of holds a special place in our heart. We show up here, we work every day. We don’t like to see damage done so we take it just as seriously as everyone else,” Daryl Seder, a senior ranger for Lake Pueblo, told CBS affiliate KKTV in Colorado Springs.
Lake Pueblo State Park is a state park located in Pueblo County that includes 60 miles of shoreline and 10,000 acres of land. It’s located about a two-hour drive from Denver.

Kia teams up with Broomfield police in Colorado for free anti-theft vehicle software upgrade
Kia America and the Broomfield Police Department are helping drivers combat auto theft. Both organizations are hosting anti-theft software upgrade events this weekend.
This event goes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Flatiron Crossing Mall from Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12. Kia drivers can expect this to be an easy and free event for them. This is for anyone who owns or even lessees a Kia.
Kia tells CBS News Colorado Traffic Reporter Brian Sherrod you don’t need an appointment; you can just show up. Along with the free software upgrade, steering wheel locks will also be given out.
The Broomfield Police Department and Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority are also at the event to provide auto theft prevention tips and information.

Colorado Department of Corrections collecting on alleged overpayments despite appeals from struggling employees
After months of speaking out anonymously against their employer, the Colorado Department of Corrections, parole officers, Lawrence Cutts and Nick Segura have nothing left to lose.
“I’m late on bills right now, borrowing money to make my mortgage payment it is putting me in a hole,” Cutts said.
Two years ago, both men were promoted to parole officer from facility work. They say they were told it would come with a 10% raise.
The DOC says it was too much, and it’s now taking it back one check at a time.
“Altogether, it’s approximately $700,” Segura said.
For Segura, the notice came while on leave after he was injured in a critical incident.
The same one that took the life of a fellow parole officer.
“You know, I struggle with the recovery process from the incident in September, and now this added a financial stress into our lives,” he added.
The reduction in pay was too much for Cutts, who decided to leave the DOC. As a result, he lost nearly his entire check.
“For the last month, I have gone to work and at the end of April when I was supposed to get paid,,” Cutts said. “I got my pay stub, and it literally said I had $55.
Cutts, who is a U.S. Army veteran, is already in the process of shifting into a role as a police officer, but the sudden change in pay means a sudden struggle to get by. In a last attempt to keep his family afloat, he’s started an online fundraiser.
“It’s really hard for me to sit back and talk about what I’m going through,” Cutts said. “I’ve worked super hard to get where I am coming from where I come from.”
The issue at the center of it all those offers were not in writing. They’re now warning anyone thinking about taking a job with the state not to make that mistake.
“Whatever they promise you, get it in writing because they are not going to stand by you,” he added.
CBS Colorado has made numerous requests to sit down with the head of the DOC to discuss the pay issues, or a statement responding to the claims of their employees. DOC declined an interview and did not provide any sort of statement.
