‘The sun’s out, that means the fun’s out': Why officials say it’s important to use extra caution on Colorado Springs roads

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – This weekend, people all around Colorado Springs took advantage of the nice weather, including motorcyclists.

Vinnie Perez of Pikes Peak Indian Motorcycle said he loves seeing all the bikers on the road this time of year.

“We are blessed here in Colorado, especially when the sun’s out, that means the fun’s out,” Perez said, “all the motorcycles were out today, it’s a great way to start the month.”

And although this is an exciting time, bikers and drivers need to be extra safe as they get familiarized with each other on the roads again.

AAA regional director of public affairs Skyler McKinley says motorcycles can be challenging to see on the road, so drivers should never drive distracted, and always be on the lookout for a biker.

“The responsibility really falls on drivers. Cars are much more dangerous than motorcycles,” McKinley said, “and cars and drivers have the responsibility to look out for the more vulnerable road users.”

It’s also important for bikers to remember to have the proper gear, identify oncoming hazards and always approach intersections with caution.

“Be mindful out there, be extra careful, especially in this March-April period until drivers are acquainted in seeing us out on our bikes again,” McKinley said.
