Police: Man crashes into downtown Colorado Springs store while allegedly chasing girlfriend
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A man was hospitalized following a serious crash in downtown Colorado Springs early Sunday morning — and is expected to face a slew of charges after being released.
Police were called to Tejon and Bijou just after 1:30 a.m., where they say a driver crashed into first a parked car, then plowed into several storefronts. The crash, officers learned after investigating the scene, was at the end of chain of criminal events that started blocks away with an alleged fight between boyfriend and girlfriend.
“Suspect and victim were involved in a domestic disturbance outside a house in the 1900 block of South Prospect Street,” a CSPD lieutenant said. “The victim ran away and attempted to get help from a neighbor across the street. The suspect temporarily lost sight of her.”
Police say the suspect got in his car and drove it into his neighbor’s vehicle.
“The suspect [then] got out of the car, attempted to break into the home across the street he thought his girlfriend was hiding in. That homeowner fired a single shot, striking the suspect,” the lieutenant said.
“The female victim was a block away and walking away at the time,” the lieutenant added
Despite his injury, the suspect allegedly jumped back in his car and peeled off towards downtown. Police got the call about the crash a short time later.
“The suspect struck a parked car and crashed into several businesses along the 200 block of North Tejon Street, causing a significant amount of damage,” the lieutenant said.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with kidnapping, assault, burglary, and several traffic charges. He was identified as 24-year-old Fidencio Meza-Pelayo.
