Colorado Springs hiker rescued from steep canyon ledge in 'dangerously low' temperatures
Firefighters in Colorado Springs braved dangerously cold temperatures over the weekend to rescue a hiker who had become stranded on a rocky ledge in the backcountry, fire officials said.
The rescue operation was launched just before 7 a.m. Saturday after the hiker reported that he was stuck on the steep terrain and unable to move in North Cheyenne Canyon, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.
The temperature at the time was about 2 degrees, KKTV reported.
Crews were able to pinpoint the hiker’s position using a drone and sent a high angle rope rescue team to hike to his location.

The hiker was treated at a hospital for injuries to his lower extremities and frostbite. Some firefighters involved in the rescue also suffered from cold exposure and were warmed and hydrated on scene, officials said.

Fire officials warned the public to stay warm and indoors while temperatures in the area remained “dangerously low” over the next few days.

“It is not safe to be outside walking, hiking or biking,” Lt. Jamie Gutschick said in a video message. “It is best to stay indoors over the next few days.”
Gutschick also said that individuals who ventured outdoors unprepared weren’t just putting themselves at risk, but also the firefighters who would have to come to their rescue.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — More than 20 dogs rescued from an RV hoarding case in Mesquite, Nevada, have been taken to Utah, where 10 have already found their forever homes.
The Humane Society of Utah took in 21 of the more than 100 neglected dogs recovered after a monthlong animal welfare investigation.

On Sunday, 13 of the dogs were made available for adoption. All but three found new families. The dogs ranged in age from 3 months old to much older.
“These guys were actually quite friendly, and they were in a little bit better health than we have seen in past cases. Of course, they all needed to be groomed, and some had minor skin ailments, but we’re making sure they’re all getting the veterinary care that they need,” said Guinn Shuster, director of marketing and communications for the Humane Society of Utah.
The Humane Society said the remaining dogs would be available for adoption Monday and throughout the first week of June.

Giustino Laudando and Michelle Santos, who lived in the RV, were both booked on eight felony counts of animal cruelty and more than 100 misdemeanor counts of animal neglect.
“The way these dogs found the help that they needed is because community members saw how they were being kept and treated, and they spoke up. It took a little bit of time for action to be taken, but it was,” Shuster said.

VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. – Valencia County Fire Department responded to a serious UTV crash after two people suffered major injuries in the Rio Puerco area.
The Valencia County Fire Department one patient was flown to the hospital with critical injuries. A second patient went by ambulance with serious injuries.
The fire department said this was the second serious ATV or UTV crash its crews handled that day.
Earlier in the day, units responded to an ATV crash that sent two children to the hospital with multiple traumatic injuries.
The fire department urged riders to wear helmets, stay off roadways and make sure children do not operate ATV or UTV vehicles without supervision.
