Newsom declares California a success while the homeless crisis worsens

While Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) continues to boast about just how great California’s economy is, the state actually is failing all but its wealthiest residents. That includes the state’s homeless population.

A new report on homelessness from the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at the University of California, San Francisco, found that 30% of the country’s homeless population resides in California, despite the state only having 12% of the country’s total population. The report puts much of the blame on California’s high housing costs.

Newsom himself has said that California “has not made progress” on homelessness, which is an understatement. He has blamed the Republican administration of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for a homelessness crisis in 2005 and blamed “localism” for the problem not being solved. Of course, when Newsom was a local official in San Francisco in 2008, he promised to end homelessness in 10 years as the mayor of the city. As you could guess, homelessness only got worse.

And yet none of this rampant homelessness or the rising cost of living in California has stopped Newsom from claiming that he is the best governor in the country. He has repeatedly boasted about the strength of the state’s economy (even with statistics that are wrong or misleading) and about just how high the state’s gross domestic product is. He has refused to address the fact that California has the worst poverty rate in the country, and he has falsely claimed that there is no exodus of residents leaving for more affordable states.

Boasting about the economy while presiding over the worst poverty and homelessness crises of any state and bragging about GDP numbers while everyday residents struggle to get by? It sounds like a bad stereotype of a heartless Republican politician, and yet it is an accurate characterization of Newsom, the Democrat who is held up as the front line warrior for progressivism.

In California, Democrats have been able to implement their preferred policies with no significantly large cadre of Republicans standing in the way, and we have all seen the results. Newsom and many Democrats think California is a success story. That is the dirty little secret of the progressive movement and the modern Democratic Party: It is run by liberal elites for liberal elites. That is why they want to bring California to the rest of the country.
