California inmate accused of killing cellmate convicted of child trafficking
An inmate at a California prison is accused of killing his cellmate, who was convicted of multiple charges, including child trafficking.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said on Monday it is investigating a homicide that took place at Kern Valley State Prison on Saturday.
Gregory Clark, 58, was observed by officers in his cell with blood on his clothing at around 3:19 p.m. on Saturday, according to the CDCR. His cellmate, 41-year-old Darius Swain, was seen unresponsive in the cell – prompting a call for assistance.
Clark was removed without incident and medical staff, who called 911, began life-saving measures on Swain.

Swain was pronounced dead at 3:48 p.m. by paramedics in the prison’s Treatment and Triage Area.
He arrived at the prison in March 2019 from Alameda County, where he was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for human trafficking of a minor with force, pimping, pandering, second-degree robbery and felon in possession of a firearm.

Clark was put in restrictive housing pending an investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit.
He arrived at the prison in March 2011 from Los Angeles County, where he was sentenced to 22 years for domestic violence, enhancement of use of a deadly weapon, prior prison term and prior felony conviction of a serious offense.
On Jan. 25, 2021, he was sentenced to two additional years in Kern County for assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon.

The Kern County Coroner will determine Swain’s cause of death. Details surrounding what took place between the two men were not available.

Cellphone battery sparks fire, evacuations on Southwest flight at Denver International Airport
Everyone on board a Southwest Airlines flight at Denver International Airport was evacuated safely Friday morning after a cellphone battery ignited. It happened on board Southwest Airlines Flight 3316 before 7 a.m. as the plane was getting ready to depart for Houston.
According to Southwest, the aircraft was still at the gate when the fire started. The crew was able to extinguish a seat fire caused by the burning cellphone. The passenger who had the phone suffered burns and was treated by local medical personnel.
Southwest told CBS News Colorado that there were 108 passengers on board when the fire started. Those passengers in the back of the aircraft used the rear emergency slides and those in the front of the plane exited through the front door. One passenger suffered minor injuries during the evacuation.
The incident is being investigated and Southwest released this statement, “Southwest’s Customer Care Team is working to accommodate the passengers on another aircraft to their original destination of Houston. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of its Customers and Employees.”
According to a CBS News Investigation published last year, similar incidents have been happening much more frequently in the skies over the United States. The FAA verifies the number of lithium-ion battery fires jumped more than 42% in the last five years.

Seattle Mariners fans have something to look forward to this offseason as it’s a foregone conclusion that franchise legend Ichiro Suzuki will earn election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. That announcement will come in January and the induction ceremony will take place next July in Cooperstown.

To this point, former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is the only unanimous Hall of Fame selection in baseball history.
One of the best pure hitters in baseball history, Ichiro amassed 3,089 hits in his United States career. In addition to that lifetime .311 average, he also stole 509 career bases.
Ichiro won a laundry list of awards including Rookie of the Year (2001) and MVP (2001). He was a two-time batting champion, a 10-time Gold Glover, a 10-time All-Star and a three-time Silver Slugger.
He played parts of 14 seasons with the Mariners, three with the Yankees and three with the Marlins. Remarkably durable throughout his career, he never played less than 136 games in a season until age 44.
He’s been working with the Mariners since retirement and is already part of the team’s Hall of Fame. He’ll be the third Mariners-specific Hall of Famer, joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez.
