LIVE UPDATES: 2 officers shot in central Phoenix; suspect still on the run
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Police Department says two of their officers were shot in central Phoenix Tuesday night.
The shooting happened near 16th Street and McDowell Road around 6 p.m., and police say the shooter is still on the loose.
The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association confirmed the officers were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The conditions of the officers are not yet known.
“My prayers are going out to the two injured Phoenix Police officers and their families,” county attorney Rachel Mitchell posted on social media.
A heavy police presence could be seen near 16th Street and McDowell Road, just west of the SR-51 freeway.
Video from Arizona’s Family News chopper showed crime scene tape around a small parking lot in the area.
Extensive road closures are in place in the surrounding areas including the McDowell Road off-ramp along the southbound SR-51.
The ramp from the Mini-Stack to the northbound SR-51 is also closed off, according to ADOT.
Arizona’s Family has reached out to the Phoenix Police Department for more information.
This is the 39th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County this year. This is the 66th officer-involved shooting statewide.
