1 dead, 1 hospitalized after I-17 crash near Cordes Lakes

CORDES LAKES, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — One person is dead, and another is fighting for their life after an Interstate 17 crash near Cordes Lakes on Sunday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation reported the crash on the southbound I-17 at Bloody Basin Road near Cordes Lakes. The Mayer Fire District was called to the accident and said that a vehicle was found with heavy damage and was impaled by a guardrail on the passenger side. Mayer Fire says two people had to be pulled out of the car. One person died at the scene, and another was flown to a hospital.

The southbound lanes of I-17 near milepost 260 were closed for a few hours as crews cleared the scene and investigated the crash. It has since reopened. You can always check traffic conditions on Arizona’s Family Traffic page.
