American mom held in UK for allegedly killing two kids can return to US for harsher sentence: report

A Colorado woman accused of killing her two young children lost her bid to avoid life in prison in the United States after a United Kingdom judge ruled that she can be extradited to the states for trial, according to Reuters.
U.K. authorities took Kimberlee Singler into custody on Dec. 30, 2023 after she was accused by Colorado authorities of drugging and killing her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, and injuring her 11-year-old daughter before she allegedly fled overseas.
Her attorney, Edward Fitzgerald, Kings Counsel (KC), who also represented Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange, argued that extraditing Singler to the U.S. would violate the European Convention of Human Rights, because she would not be eligible for parole if convicted, according to NBC News affiliate KOAA.
AMERICAN MOM ACCUSED OF KILLING 2 KIDS FIGHTS TO STAY IN UK OVER POTENTIAL LIFE SENTENCE: REPORT
Kimberlee Singler, 35, is currently charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of child abuse and one count of assault after she allegedly killed her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son and injured her 11-year-old daughter. (CSPD)
Now that Judge John Zani has ruled in the case, U.K. home secretary Yvette Cooper will decide whether Singler will be sent back to Colorado, NBC reported.
Singler, 36, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of child abuse and one count of assault.
Joel Smith, KC, the attorney representing the U.S. in the U.K. extradition case, said in September when Singler’s extradition proceedings began that Singler allegedly killed her two children and tried to kill the third during an ongoing and contentious custody battle between her and her husband, NBC reported at the time.
“She shot the first child in the head and stabbed her in the neck, she shot the second child to the head and stabbed her in the neck. She attacked the third child to the neck with a knife causing serious lacerations,” Smith said, according to NBC.
COLORADO POLICE VOW ‘JUSTICE’ TO CHILDREN ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY MOTHER BEFORE SHE FLED TO UK

Colorado Springs police officers initially responded to reports of a burglary just past midnight on Dec. 19 at Singler’s home on the 5300 block of Palomino Ranch Point. When police arrived, they located the two deceased children and the wounded 11-year-old girl. (GoFundMe/ The Wentz Family)
In their investigation of the crime scene in December 2023, Colorado authorities located spent rounds, a blood-stained knife and empty bottles of sleeping pills in a trash can. Police found the two dead children in bed together.
Colorado Springs police said at the time of the crime that they received a 911 call reporting a burglary from Singler’s address, but they later found the report to be “unfounded.”
“[The surviving child] said that the defendant had told the three children to close their eyes, she guided the first two children into the bedroom and approached the third child and told her to close her eyes. She then cut her to the side of the neck,” Smith said in September, according to NBC.

Smith argued in September that a governor could eventually grant Singler clemency if she is convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
Fitzgerald, meanwhile, said life sentences without the possibility of parole in the U.K. are “totally alien to us.” There were 63 people serving life sentences in the U.K. two months ago, whereas the U.S. had 49,000 people serving life sentences, Smith said, according to NBC.

San Francisco premiere for opera based on Journey to the West

Huang Ruo watched his kids on Halloween during the coronavirus pandemic, his son dressed as Spider-Man and Batman, his daughter as Elsa from Frozen.
“I was just thinking, wouldn’t it be nice to have a superhero figure from Asia so all these kids could have something from that part of the world to wear, to look up to?” the composer said.
The work, with singing in English and Mandarin, will be given its world premiere by the San Francisco Opera on November 14.

The City of Denver planned to convert a former motel into a shelter. It's now on the market for $10

DENVER — A former motel that the City of Denver planned to use to shelter people experiencing homelessness is now on the market for $10.
The city purchased the former Stay Inn, located along Peoria Street just south of Interstate 70, for $9 million 18 months ago. Since then, the property has sat vacant.
“That building has been there for so long,” said Amy Beck, an advocate with Together Denver who has watched the property sit untouched.
In May 2021, then-Mayor Michael Hancock stood in front of the Stay Inn and announced the city’s plan to purchase the hotel and convert it into a shelter for the unhoused.
“This building here behind us represents hope,” Hancock said at the time.
Congresswoman Diana DeGette helped the city secure $2 million in federal funding to purchase the hotel.

Denver hopes to use DeGette proposed funding to buy hotel to house homeless
The city purchased the 96-unit motel for $9 million in 2023. Eighteen months later — and nearly four years since the original announcement — the hotel remains boarded up.
A spokesperson for Denver’s Department of Housing Stability (HOST) said a “necessary environmental review process which took longer than anticipated” led to the delays.
The City of Denver is putting the hotel back on the market for $10. However, there’s a reason behind the puzzling price tag.
The new owner would be responsible for transforming the building into “supportive housing” for those experiencing homelessness, according to the city.
Beck said she was shocked by the $10 list price but is all for it if it gets people off the street.
“At this point, I’m willing to take anything,” said Beck.

The low price tag is also to offset the expected costs. The selected partner will need to fund all renovations and maintenance, which the city estimates will cost a minimum of $5 million.
Whoever the buyer ends up being, Beck hopes they know what they’re taking on.
“Whoever is managing the property, they need to be trauma-informed. They need to be willing to deal with people that have been through an immense amount of trauma,” Beck said.
The hope is to bring a buyer in front of the Denver City Council later this year. Beck said there’s no time to waste.
“Please, just get it up and running because we have so many families that could fill that building right now that are living on the street, in their cars, and we need that space immediately,” said Beck.

Seattle winter weather: Cold and icy Friday morning ahead

Seattle weather: Icy spots on the roads Friday morning
FOX 13 Seattle weather anchor Stephen Kilbreath is tracking frigid overnight temperatures that will likely make for an icy Friday morning commute.
Thursday turned out to be a pretty nice day, but it was still cold. Seattle got to 39 degrees, which is 11 degrees below the average temp. Friday morning’s commute could be a little sketchy with ice, and the possibility of left over slush in places.
Local perspective:
Temperatures early Friday will be well below freezing, into the mid 20s. But during the day it will get to the low 40s out on the coast and upper 30s elsewhere.

What’s next:
The chance for more lowland snow will pick up again from Friday night into Saturday morning as a low pressure system moves inland south of the area. Amounts will be lighter than Thursday morning’s event, but stay tuned to the forecast as we get closer.

This weekend will bring a slight chance for showers at times, but it looks more dry than wet. We will remain very cool through the middle of next week with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.
