Brent Sass disqualified from 2024 Iditarod
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Former Iditarod champion Brent Sass has been disqualified from competing in the 2024 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Sass, an accomplished musher who won the Yukon Quest Alaska 300 earlier this month, is the second musher this week to be barred from the race by the Iditarod Trail Committee.
In a one-sentence press release, the board wrote members unanimously voted to remove Sass from this year’s race, pointing to Rule 53: “All Iditarod mushers will be held to a high standard of personal and professional conduct. Musher conduct that is recklessly injurious to the Iditarod, Iditarod competitors, sponsors or anyone associated with the race is strictly prohibited.”
Preparations are well underway for this year’s race, which kicks off next Saturday with a ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage.
The 2024 Iditarod field is now down to 38 mushers, according to online records.
Reigning Iditarod Rookie of the Year Eddie Burke Jr. was also disqualified from this year’s race.
This is a developing story.
