Herman Miller made a convertible standing desk that actually looks great

Herman Miller has announced a new height-adjustable desk that doesn’t look like one. Instead of relying on just two columns to raise and lower its work surface, the Spout Sit-to-Stand Table uses four cylindrical legs, each containing their own motor. The design makes the Spout table easier to move around (it even includes optional wheels), allows for more people to use it simultaneously, and boosts its lifting strength to up to 400 pounds.

As with most of Herman Miller’s products, the Spout comes with one major drawback: its price tag. According to a release from the company today, the Spout will be available in sizes ranging from 24×48 inches up to 48×84 inches. However, Herman Miller’s online store currently only lists three sizes available for purchase. A 23×46-inch option which starts at $2,300, a 29×58-inch for $2,600, and a 35×70-inch for $2,700. Upgrading the largest version with a walnut veneer finish and a hidden cable tray boosts its price to $3,400.

With its unique leg arrangement, the larger versions of the Spout table have enough room for chairs to be used on all four sides. That potentially makes it a more useful piece of furniture for collaborative spaces — assuming everyone using the table can agree when it’s time to raise or lower it.

Although the cable tray, which hangs beneath the table to keep piles of wires out of sight, is an optional accessory, the Spout still features a cable management system on the underside, including clips on one leg to wrangle its power cord.

An integrated storage drawer on one side is large enough to accommodate laptops and other smaller electronics, and they can also be charged while inside. The Spout is one of Herman Miller’s first products to work with its new Ello Power accessories. Integrated into the surface of the table are a pair of USB-C ports that can each deliver up to 100W of power — enough to charge a laptop — although power delivery drops to 65W while both are in use. If that’s not enough, more USB-C ports can be added through additional accessories.

Some Kindles now let you double-tap anywhere to turn the page

The new software wasn’t immediately available as an over-the-air update for my Kindle Colorsoft, but I was able to download it and install it manually following Amazon’s instructions. The feature works well using relatively light taps anywhere on the Colorsoft, and since it requires two taps in rapid succession, it’s not easy to trigger by mistake. Unfortunately, it’s limited to just one direction. You can either use it to jump to the next page, or scroll down a long list of books. Perhaps a future update will enable triple-taps as a way to scroll up or go back to a previous page.

Although the 5.18.1 software update is also available for older versions of the entry-level Kindle, Paperwhite, Scribe, and Oasis, the new double-tap feature is only available for the Colorsoft and 12th-generation Paperwhite, Amazon spokesperson Connor Rice confirmed to The Verge.

Porsche’s next Taycan gets an infotainment upgrade — but no new CarPlay

Porsche is upgrading the infotainment in the upcoming 2026 model year Taycan, 911, Panamera, and Cayenne with “more responsive” software and features such as an Alexa personal assistant.

The 2026 Porsche Communication Management (PCM) will get the Porsche App Center introduced in the Macan Electric. It provides “direct access to a large number of apps” and a “wide range of services” that can run on the touchscreen. In an email with The Verge, Porsche spokesperson Calvin Kim said these new models run on the MIB3 architecture, first launched in 2022, and not Google’s Android Automotive OS like in the Macan Electric.

Porsche’s in-car apps could reduce the need of phone mirroring services like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Many EV makers like Tesla, Rivian and GM don’t even include the ability to mirror your device and require you to subscribe to connectivity services inside the car.

Porsche will include 10 years of Porsche Connect service standard in each of these new vehicles to “optimize the digital user experience.” Part of that experience also includes Amazon Alexa, which in addition to Porsche’s Voice Pilot, can be used as the drivers’ digital voice assistant. Alexa can play music and podcasts, open your garage door, edit to-do and shopping lists and more. Porsche doesn’t say if this is the revamped AI-powered Alexa Plus that Amazon announced in February.

Porsche is also adding Dolby Atmos support with the new PCM system in models with premium audio equipment like Bose that can give occupants an immersive, spatial sound experience. 2026 Porsches can be ordered now and will arrive at US stores in “late summer 2025.”
