A cat started a fire that caused severe damage to a kitchen in Dallas County, Texas, this week after it was able to turn on the stove, officials said.
The Garland Fire Department responded to the fire Wednesday and immediately extinguished the blaze, the department said in a release.
Then investigators found home surveillance video that showed a cat jumping up onto the stove, which had items on it, and turned on the stove, igniting the blaze.

In the video, the cat quickly leaps off the stove after turning on a burner, which ignited the items sitting on top.
A picture of the kitchen after the fire showed the fire had spread to other appliances, the kitchen door and the ceiling before firefighters were able to put it out.

There was no damage to the rest of the home.
The department reminded residents to keep combustible items like paper towels or plastic containers off stovetops, to always turn off burners and ovens, to never leave cooking unattended and to keep the area clutter-free.

It also suggested using safety stove knob covers.
“Even when a stove or cooktop is not actively in use, residual heat or accidental activation can quickly ignite nearby combustible items. A few seconds of prevention can stop a fire from starting,” the department said in a release.

In-N-Out Burger opens new flagship location on Las Vegas Strip
Los Angeles’ favorite burger chain is taking over the Vegas Strip.
In-N-Out Burger’s flagship restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip opens today, marking a major milestone for the iconic Southern California-based chain.
“It’s officially official,” the company announced in a post on X Tuesday. “In-N-Out’s new flagship Las Vegas location will open tomorrow, with over 8,000 square feet on one level and beautiful views of the Strip.”
The new restaurant is likely to become one of the most visited In-N-Out locations in the company’s history, given its spot in the heart of the Las Vegas tourist corridor, adjacent to the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
News of the flagship In-N-Out Burger, located at 3747 S. Las Vegas Blvd., has been in the company’s “opening soon” section of its website since earlier this year.
The family-owned business has operated restaurants throughout Las Vegas for years, but its latest opening represents a significant expansion of the brand’s presence as one of the country’s fastest-growing burger chains.
While California remains In-N-Out’s largest market by far, the chain has steadily expanded eastward over the past decade, opening stores in states including Colorado, Texas and Tennessee.
When CEO Lynsi Snyder announced the company’s expansion into Tennessee in 2023, she hinted that other states near its distribution hub in Lancaster, Texas, would be coming soon.
Snyder also announced last year that In-N-Out’s corporate office in Irvine will close by 2030, with all operations shifting back to the company’s roots at a home office in Baldwin Park, where her grandparents founded the chain in 1948.
In-N-Out has since grown from a small Southern California hamburger stand into a favorite known for its simple, affordable menu of burgers, fries and milkshakes.
It’s unclear whether any festivities are planned for the new Vegas opening, but burger lovers should expect long lines to order their Double-Double, animal-style fries or Snyder’s go-to order: a double meat with fried mustard, extra spread, pickles and chopped chilis.

Father killed twin boys, shot at mother before taking his life in suspected Canoga Park murder-suicide: LAPD
Twin boys killed in Canoga Park shooting identified
A father suspected of killing his twin 10-year-old boys also shot at his wife and missed before turning the gun on himself Sunday night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The suspected murder-suicide happened at a grandmother’s birthday party at an apartment on the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue near Strathern Street at around 7:15 p.m., KTLA’s Hailey Winslow reports.
Police responded to a call for shots fired in the area. Officers arrived at the apartment and found the father and his sons dead from gunshot wounds to the head.
The boys killed in the shooting have been identified as Joseph and Greysen Chavez. The mother of the two boys was seen grieving with her family outside the apartment complex Sunday night.
A neighbor told KTLA that she spoke with the family in passing earlier that day.
“They were super nice. The sweetest boys ever,” the neighbor said. “I really didn’t believe it until I saw them take out the bodies.”
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Los Angeles church fire forces firefighters into defensive mode
A large church fire in Los Angeles had firefighters operating in defensive mode Monday morning.
The fire was reported at Greater New Holy Trinity Church in the 10800 block of South Broadway in the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood around 5:10 a.m.
Flames were showing on the roof of the church when firefighters arrived, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“Units are operating in the defensive mode,” the department said.
When firefighters shift to defensive mode, they remain outside the structure because conditions inside are considered too dangerous or unstable.
