WVU’s board of governors to consider two-year extension for President Gee – WV MetroNews
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University’s Board of Governors will consider a contract extension for President Gordon Gee at a regular meeting next week.
Based on the agenda for Monday’s meeting, board members will evaluate Gee’s performance and consider a two-year extension to June 30, 2025.
The discussion comes as the university, more broadly, addresses anticipated budget gaps in the millions of dollars over the next few years. University officials are coping with that challenge through staff cuts, tuition increases and the use of reserves.
Gee, 79, most recently agreed to a three-year extension in 2019 with no increase to his base salary of $800,000 per year.
In 2019, Gee told the board of governors, “I am grateful to the Board for this vote of confidence.” “This is an important time in the history of West Virginia University. We have made great strides, but I believe there is so much more we can accomplish. I look forward to the work ahead.”
Gee was first hired to lead West Virginia University in 1981 at the age of 36. Gee left in 1985 to serve as president at the University of Colorado, Brown University, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State University on two occasions, and then Gee returned to lead WVU in 2014.
When he returned to serve as president for the second time, Gee replaced Jim Clements and was asked by the WVU Board of Governors to serve as the 24th president of the university.
The Board of Governors will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, July 31, in the Barnette BOG Room at the Erickson Alumni Center.
